Part 1 SESSION 1: CORONARY PHYSIOLOGY IN THE REAL WORLD Simon Kennon, Stephan Achenbach, Sergio Baptista, Matthias Gotberg, Divaka Perera, Andrew SP Sharp, Eric Van Belle
Overview
During EuroPCR 2015 (FR), Radcliffe Cardiology, in association with the Interventional Cardiology Review journal, filmed a roundtable discussion focusing on the topical area of 'Coronary Physiology'.
The discussion was moderated by Editor-in-Chief, Simon Kennon (London, UK). He was joined by expert group of physicians including Prof Stephan Achenbach (Erlangen, DE), Drs Sergio Bravo Baptista (Amadora, PT), Matthias Gotberg (Lund, SE), Divaka Perera (London, UK), Andrew Sharp (Exeter, UK) and Prof Eric Van Belle (Lille, FR).
The meeting comprised of three panel discussions on a range of topical issues related to all aspects of coronary physiology from the clinical trial and registry data, current performance and utilisation, through to emerging technological advances and future use of physiological assessment.
This educational activity is intended for an international audience, specifically interventional cardiologists and cardiologists. However, other healthcare professionals involved in the care of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients will also find this topical.
Panellists
- Simon Kennon, Interventional Cardiologist and Head of the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Programme, London Chest Hospital, London, UK
- Stephan Achenbach, Professor of Cardiology, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen, Germany
- Sergio Bravo Baptista, Cardiology Department, Hospital Fernando Fonseca, Amadora, Portugal
- Matthias Gotberg, Director of Cardiac Cath Laboratory, Lund University, Lund, Sweden
- Divaka Perera, Consultant Cardiologist, Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital, London, UK
- Andrew Sharp, Consultant Cardiologist, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter, UK
- Eric Van Belle, Professor – Head of Interventional Cardiology, University of Lille Hospital, France
Learning Objectives
The assigned learning objectives for this roundtable are listed for your information:
- To review the real-world utilisation and performance of coronary physiology assessment
- To consider recent and emerging data on coronary physiology assessment technology in particular in non-culprit disease, and in the setting of a diagnostic catheterization
- To discuss on-going coronary physiology assessment research
- To identify and refine the indications for utilisation of coronary physiology assessment in particular in non-culprit ACS, and diagnostic catheterizations
- To establish the nature of future coronary physiology research and technology developments

Simon Kennon
Consultant Cardiologist
Dr Simon Kennon qualified from Manchester Medical School in 1992. He completed general medical training in and around London (Royal Free Hospital, Southend General Hospital, Newham General Hospital and the London Chest Hospital) before training in General and Interventional Cardiology at St Bartholomew’s, and the London Chest Hospitals. His training continued with a fellowship in interventional cardiology at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.
He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist in 2005. His NHS work is divided between the London Chest Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust) and Barnet & Chase Farms Hospital NHS Trust.
His private practice is based at the King’s Oak Hospital, the Cavell Hospital and the London Independent Hospital.
Dr Kennon is experienced in the management of all general cardiology conditions (including palpitations, high blood pressure, high cholesterol), but his special interests are the assessment and treatment of chest pain…

Divaka Perera
Divaka Perera is a Professor of Interventional Cardiology in the School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences and an Honorary Cardiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He graduated in medicine from Cambridge University, undertook cardiology specialist training in London and Sussex and received a Clinical Senior Lectureship Award from the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2008. In 2013, he received the BCS Michael Davies Early Career Award for contribution to cardiovascular science.
He runs a translational research programme into the mechanisms and consequences of reduced blood supply to the heart muscle in chronic coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction and valve disease. He is also involved in designing and performing multicentre clinical trials to evaluate novel treatments for patients with ischaemic heart disease. He is the chief investigator of the NIHR-funded UK multi-centre randomised control trial REVIVED, which seeks to clarify…
Andrew SP Sharp
Consultant Cardiologist
Prof Andrew Sharp qualified from Edinburgh Medical School in 1998.
